Short timeline of gay history:
4000-2000 BC ~ The Sumerians, originators
of the first urban civilization, had gay male chanter-priests
called assinu meaning 'womb' men. (Allegro)
c2100-2000 BC ~ The Babylonian epic Gilgamesh
portrays an erotic
relationship between the hero and his companion Enkidu. Gilgamesh
dreams of finding an axe and rejoicing over it, taking it
and placing it by his side. His mother interprets the dream:
'The axe which you saw is a man; you cohabited with him as
a woman because he will be a match for you.' Enkidu then appears.
When Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh 'veiled his friend like a bride'
(Jacobsen).

regularly raided gay bars, harrassing and arresting patrons,
but on 29th June the lesbians and gay men of the Stonewall
Inn fought back, forcing the police to barricade themselves
inside the bar for their own protection. It was the world's
first recorded gay riot, and an inspiration to generations
of gay activists around the world ever since.

and Gay Association is founded.
